Travis Scott and Big Boi joined Super Bowl LIII halftime show headliners Maroon 5 Sunday, ignoring calls to skip the gig in support of Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who started the #TakeAKnee movement to protest racial injustices.  But after all the controversy and criticism in the weeks leading up to the game, the end result was pretty tame.

Scott, introduced by Squidward, the character from the hit Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, performed “Sicko Mode.”  The introduction was a mini-tribute to the late SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away last November.

The tribute was a reference an episode of the show titled “Band Geeks,” featured Squidward directing a halftime show in which various residents of Bikini Bottom performed “Sweet Victory.”  However, Maroon 5 didn’t perform “Sweet Victory, much to the dismay of more than a million fans who’d signed a petition demanding they do so.

For his part, Atlanta native Big Boi performed “The Way You Move,” originally recorded with his band Outkast.

Scott and Big Boi drew some heat for agreeing to perform during the halftime show, but they were by no means the first choice to co-headline. Rihanna, Cardi B and JAY-Z were also rumored to have who turned down the gig.

As for the game itself, the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3, to take home their sixth championship, tying the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins.
