Tracee Ellis Ross Set To Executive Produce A ‘Daria’ Spinoff
Tracee Ellis Ross is expanding her career into animation as the lead voice and executive producer for a spinoff of the MTV series Daria, titled Jodie.
“I am thrilled to bring this project to life with MTV, both as executive producer and by voicing Jodie’s character,” the black-ish star says. “Being able to give voice to fresh, feminist and unexplored stories of young women excites me.”
Daria aired from 1997-2002 as a spinoff from the Beavis and Butt-Head series. Jodie will revolve around Daria’s good friend Jodie Landon after she graduates from college and begins her career in the tech world.
“With the brilliant, sweet and sarcastic black girl magic that is Jodie Landon, we will feature a diverse cast, comprised mainly of unapologetically smart and ambitious young female characters who are vulnerable and flawed and interesting and funny,” Ellis continues. “As a very cool bonus, ‘Jodie’ will be the first adult animated show in almost 20 years that will star a black woman. It will be a smart, funny workplace comedy full of commentary about everything from gentrification to sex to tech to call-out culture.”
No details were released on when Jodie will debut.
Ross will appear at the BET Awards on June 23 in Los Angeles. She is now shooting her first film in over a decade, Covers, a comedy set against a backdrop of “the talent, fame, and fast-paced world of Hollywood’s music scene.”
