PPS Almost Scammed Out Of Nearly $3 Million
Portland, Ore. – Portland Public Schools nearly lost $2.9 million dollars in a scam. They say the money was transferred to a fraudulent account that was disguised as a PPS construction contractor. But the bank was able to freeze the funds. PPS has put two employees on paid leave, but they say they didn’t commit any crime. KGW spoke to a cyber security expert who says cases like this often start with a fishing email to someone in the company.
PPS is reviewing all their payment procedures and all district staff will get updated training to try and prevent incidents like this from happening again.
