Meek Mill and JAY Z are teaming up with a number of sports figures — including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft — for an important new initiative designed to transform the American criminal justice system.

At a press conference in New York City on Wednesday, Meek, Jay, Kraft, Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, Brooklyn Nets co-owner Clara Wu Tsai and others announced the REFORM Alliance, which will share time, resources, energy and platforms to make the maximum impact. CNN’s Van Joneswill be the alliance’s CEO.

Formed in the wake of Meek’s prison sentence, which saw him sentenced to two-to-four years for a 2017 probation violation, the REFORM Alliance will work to pass probation and parole bills at the state level, and to call for comprehensive reform.

“Creating the REFORM Alliance is one of the most important things I’ve ever done in my life,” said Meek in a statement. ” If you thought my case was unfair, there are millions of others dealing with worse situations…we want to change outdated laws, give people hope and reform a system that’s stacked against us.”

And at the press conference, Meek told reporters, “I’m here to speak for the people who don’t have a voice. I come from that side of the wall.”

“I didn’t ask to be the face of reform,” he added. “I don’t want to be the face of anything. I just wanna bridge gaps and make the world a better place, especially for my culture and the environment I grew up [in], where the system…[is] basically targeted for people that look like me.”

Currently, there are an estimated 6.6 million people in the U.S. who are either in prison, on probation or paroled.
