SEATTLE (AP) – Washington state is paying $50,000 to a man who was rearrested after being mistakenly released early from prison due to a long-running software glitch.

Orlando Wright was one of more than 3,000 inmates released prematurely due to the coding error, which lasted from 2002 to 2015.

He got out of prison 76 days early in 2012 from an eight-year robbery sentence. By the time the state figured out the mistake and hauled him back into custody in 2015, he had a job, a car and was enrolled in a welding program at a technical school.

He lost all of that when he was rearrested to serve the remaining time. He alleged constitutional violations.

U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik approved the settlement Monday.

The state also agreed to pay $100,000 for Wright’s legal fees and costs.
