Joyner Lucas Claims He Set The Stage For Childish Gambino
Joyner Lucas is convinced that his controversial “I’m Not Racist” video was the precursor to Childish Gambino‘s conversation-starting mega-hit “This Is America.”
In a new interview with Billboard, Lucas explains his sentiments behind this theory while also speaking at large on his pair of Grammy nominations for the record.
“I feel like ‘I’m Not Racist’ changed a lot of things, and it caused a lot of damage and opened up room for conversations,” Lucas, who co-directed the visual with Ben Proulx, says.
He continues, “I pushed the envelope for people like Childish Gambino to come out and make ‘This Is America.’ I feel like I made him comfortable enough to make a record like that.”
Lucas caps off his Gambino theory by praising the Hiro Murai-directed “This Is America” clip.
“I love that video,” he says. “I think he’s going to win [Best Music Video]—I hope he wins it.”
Lucas and Gambino are having a face-off in the aforementioned Grammy category, which also counts The Carters‘ “Apes***,” Tierra Whack‘s “Mumbo Jumbo” and Janelle Monáe‘s “Pynk” as contenders.
“I’m Not Racist” is also nominated in the Best Rap Song category.
