In spite of the controversy surrounding him, R. Kelly still managed to make a public appearance and send a rather defiant message to his critics.

The R&B crooner, who has been accused of being a serial sexual abuser, was spotted at a Chicago nightclub on Wednesday night. In fan-captured footage, Kelly is seen belting out a snippet of his 1993 hit “Bump n Grind” before a crowd at the V75 Lounge.

Following his acapella rendition of the record, Kelly then makes a bold statement. “Somebody make some motherf*****g noise,” he shouted. “Y’all motherf*****s don’t know it’s my motherf*****g birthday and I don’t give a f*** what’s going on tonight.”

Kelly’s birthday was actually Tuesday, January 8; he’s 52.

According to TMZ, Kelly’s birthday extravaganza was briefly interrupted after someone informed Chicago police of the singer’s location and claimed there was a warrant out for his arrest. Once authorities arrived, however, they realized there was no such warrant, and allowed Kelly to go free.

That same night, elsewhere in the city, activist Darletta Scruggs and media personality Kendra G organized a rally against the singer outside of his infamous Chicago studio.
