More Female Rappers Clap Back At Jermaine Dupri
Jermaine Dupri has found himself embroiled in a heated debate about contemporary female rappers, after sharing his thoughts on the genre’s new wave of lyricists.
Thursday, the So So Def founder sat down with People and spoke about breaking ground with Da Brat in the early ’90s. But when asked to name a few of his favorite female MCs of today, Dupri did nothing but criticize.
“I feel like they’re all rapping about the same thing,” the music mogul says in a clip. “It’s like strippers rapping and as far as rap goes, I’m not getting who’s the best rapper.”
Dupri’s comments spread like wildfire online, and prompted responses from a handful of today’s female acts, including Cardi B.
“First of all, I rap about my p**** because she my best friend. And second of all, it’s because it seems like that’s what people want to hear,” the Bronx-bred artist said candidly in a video posted to social media on Thursday night.

As proof, Cardi said that her single “Be Careful,” lifted from her debut album Invasion of Privacy, received a tepid response from fans because it was a serious ballad that addressed infidelity. She then urged critics to support the plethora of women “rapping they a** off.”
Viral sensation Doja Cat voiced a similar sentiment, after blasting Dupri for his comments.
She added: “There’s so much out there to appreciate.”
New York newcomer Melii also shared a loaded response, writing on Instagram: “Strippers have bars and goals too!”
Dupri has yet to offer a rebuttal to the leading ladies.
