Bronx Zoo Tiger Is 1st Tiger to Test Positive for Coronavirus

Nadia, a tiger at New York City’s Bronx Zoo, is the first known tiger to positively test for the COVID-19, according to CNN. The 4-year-old female animal is experiencing a dry cough, but is expected to recover. Meanwhile, five other lions and tigers at the zoo have developed symptoms; the animals are thought to have been infected by an asymptomatic zoo employee.

“Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers,” the zoo said. “It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries.”

The zoo had been closed since March 16. The USDA advises that anyone who has coronavirus should minimize contact with pets and animals.
