Backers Of Gun Safe Storage Measure To Start Gathering Signatures
Portland, Or. – State of Safety Action will begin gathering signatures this week to secure a ballot title for its safe gun storage measure it hopes to put before voters next year. Spokesman Jake Weigler says they need to collect 1,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot title.
He says they’re holding a training for volunteers on Wednesday. He says “the horrific events of this weekend underscore the need for stronger gun laws like the ones we’re proposing.”
Initiative Petition 40 says firearms must be secured with a trigger or cable lock or in a locked container when the firearm is not carried by or under the person’s direct control. It also says a lost or stolen fire arm must be reported within 24 hours of the time the person knew or should have known about the loss or theft.
The Oregon Firearms Association issued a statement when the petition drive was first announced last month. It calls it dangerous and vindictive.
